SYNOPSIS Regardless of its geographic location, the design of an airport is more dependent on its strict functional and technical requirements than any other criteria. Runways and taxiways must be of certain length and width with very specific orientation which may not have any relationship with the fabric or order of the city. Constant necessity for security naturally isolates itself from its surroundings both physically and visually. The need for the neighboring buildings to have regulated heights and densities to allow clearances for take-offs and landings limit any diverse growth around its boundaries. Buildings, infrastructure and the ground within the airport are all designed around the dimensions of large aircrafts, which makes human-scale activities neither possible nor desired. An airport never needs to fit itself into the city. It is the city that always adapts to the consequences of an airport.

<img src="http://payload126.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/4822864/2013 03 13 - Juney Lee - Slides4_640.jpg" width="640" height="339" width_o="2048" height_o="1084" src_o="http://payload126.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/4822864/2013 03 13 - Juney Lee - Slides4_o.jpg" data-mid="27777438"  border="0" align="left"/>

Having served as a Francisco de Miranda military air base air base for nearly half a century, what is now called the La Carlota Airport remains as an island of enormous open space in the middle of the city filled with unrealized potential, and yet completely disintegrated from the rest of the city. However, the sudden availability of 103 hectares of flat land does not necessarily mean a sudden resolution. Its absence from Caracas during its fastest and richest growth in history cannot be made up by an overnight transformation of it into something entirely new or different. While the site will be asked to do a lot for the city that it was never designed to do, La Carlota must be rehabilitated, acclimated and integrated slowly back into the city.

<img src="http://payload126.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/4822864/2013 03 13 - Juney Lee - Slides5_640.jpg" width="640" height="339" width_o="2048" height_o="1084" src_o="http://payload126.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/4822864/2013 03 13 - Juney Lee - Slides5_o.jpg" data-mid="27777441"  border="0" align="left"/>

A park is an area of land that is typically in a largely natural state for the enjoyment of the public. It is a place of recreation, refuge and relief for the city. However, the “urban park” that La Carlota is asked to become is not a park in this traditional sense of openness and recreation. As one of the greenest cities in South America, the most prime real estate within the heart of Caracas does not need to be filled with lush vegetation or landscaping to make the city any more “green.” It is not an opportunity to design amenities of high commodity that will distinguish itself as a destination, which will only continue to reinforce its foreignness and isolation within the context of the city.

<img src="http://payload126.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/4822864/2013 03 13 - Juney Lee - Slides6_640.jpg" width="640" height="339" width_o="2048" height_o="1084" src_o="http://payload126.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/4822864/2013 03 13 - Juney Lee - Slides6_o.jpg" data-mid="27777444"  border="0" align="left"/>

The years of physical isolation needs to be dissolved in order for the site to be rehabilitated before it can be accepted back into the city as a part of it. The site needs to detach itself from the scale of the aircrafts, and reorganize itself by providing architectural elements and means of access that is more appropriate for a human being. The programmatic disconnect between La Carlota and its surrounding neighborhoods must be amended for appropriate reintegration. Instead of becoming a defined object with clearly prescribed objectives, La Carlota should be a flexible catalyst that will not only integrate itself back into the city, but also stitch together the various neighborhoods around the site.

RETHINKING TRANSIT IN CARACAS Caracas offers a wide range of transportation alternatives. However, the city suffers from chronic traffic congestion. Availability is negated by inefficiency, and lack of relationship or transfer-ability between different modes causes the entire transportation grid to perform far below its full potential.

NEW TRANSIT HUB FOR EAST CARACAS Located in the center of the eastern half of Caracas, and at the intersection of three Municipalities, La Carlota is strategically positioned to be the major transportation hub for Caracas. Three stations are proposed for La Carlota, and each functions differently depending on its location within the site, and its juxtaposed neighborhoods.

STRATEGY 1 : Form That is Contextually Appropriate for the Climate & Geography

In a dessert climate, vernacular methods of responding to the climate can be used to use the form of the house as the shield from the harsh climate. A south facing wall not only shades the building, but it can also be used for catching northern winds to cool the house.

<img src="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/3478169/00001 - SUN DIAGRAM_640.jpg" width="640" height="234" width_o="1650" height_o="602" src_o="http://payload58.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/3478169/00001 - SUN DIAGRAM_o.jpg" data-mid="23595918"  border="0" align="left"/>

STRATEGY 2 : Using the Walls to Create a More Diverse / Dynamic Urban Fabric and “Sense of Place”

For miles and miles, the urban fabric of Riyadh consists of free standing villas and buildings, that are only accessible by cars. The car-dependent society only promotes growth that is geared towards the cars, further spreading the extents of urban sprawl. By using the walls at both urban and domestic scales, more pleasant, walkable environment can be created at the ground level. The Saudi’s social resistance to public life and walking will be encouraged to adapt to a more dynamic way of urban life, when the infrasture is equipped to do so.

HOUSING UNIT DESIGN CONCEPT

TRADITIONAL COURTYARD HOUSE
While considered archaic and socially outdated, the traditional courtyard offers vernacular enviornmental strategies that are efficient, and inherently embedded within the form of the house.

CONTEMPORARY VILLA
Contemporary is the popular house form, offering individually free-standing houses, completely detached from other houses. Resulting setbacks and open space is minimal and unusable.

RE-ORIENTED VILLA (PROPOSED)
Combining the vernacular environmental strategies and the modern criteria for individualism and privacy, the re-oriented villa is an environmentally responsive house with a private “side-yard” that has a wide range of usage.

CONCEPT Achieving the artificial illusion of being deep in the ocean is not an easy task. Imagine being under water in a swimming pool, and looking up towards the sky and the surface of the water. Direct sunlight not only makes it difficult for one to see, but also makes the depth of the water appear shallower than it actually is. When direct solar exposure is eliminated using a shading device, the underside of the shading device casts a shadow on the surface of the water. This is an important criteria in giving the viewers the illusion of being submerged in the gulf stream. The oculus, which is a slightly concave acrylic through which the viewer looks at the tank, is the only part of the tank that will need to be shaded.

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2670957/Solar Shield Concept-01_640.jpg" width="640" height="428" width_o="950" height_o="636" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2670957/Solar Shield Concept-01_o.jpg" data-mid="13573878"  border="0" align="left"/>

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2670957/Strip-Diagonals-03_640.png" width="640" height="14" width_o="2048" height_o="44" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2670957/Strip-Diagonals-03_o.png" data-mid="13563834"  border="0" align="left"/>

THE VIRTUAL SUN There are many software that can virtually simulate the sun. Because this is not a environmental performance test, a tool that can process more precise physical dimensions and data is necessary. Using VB.NET in Grasshopper, a virtual sun can be created through scripting various parameters that determine the physical properties of the sun: location and time.

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2670957/Sun Definition_640.jpg" width="640" height="497" width_o="1000" height_o="776" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2670957/Sun Definition_o.jpg" data-mid="13563966"  border="0" align="left"/>

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2670957/Sun Script Zoomed In_640.jpg" width="640" height="369" width_o="943" height_o="544" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2670957/Sun Script Zoomed In_o.jpg" data-mid="13563977"  border="0" align="left"/>

PARAMETRIC PROCEDURE The 3D vector that can be quantified through the VB.NET script can be used to determine the angle at which the light will refract when it hits the surface of the water. The resulting angle is what determines the Resultant Vector, the angle and direction of light under water in the tank.

These two vectors(Sun and the Resultant Vector) will be used in a reverse sequence to determine the location and shape of shading device that will be needed to cover the oculus. The resultant vector can be used to project the circumference of the oculus towards the surface of the water. The cylindrical volume intersects the surface of the water at an angle, creating an intersection curve in the shape of an ellipse. This ellipse is then extruded up towards the sky using the 3D sun vector. The intersection of the extruded cylindrical volume and the plane of the roof, is the shape of the shading device necessary at that specific time to shade the oculus. Depending on the height of the roof, which is dependent on the rest of the building, will determine the final shape and location of the shading device.

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2670957/Sun Analysis_640.jpg" width="640" height="419" width_o="2048" height_o="1341" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2670957/Sun Analysis_o.jpg" data-mid="13564006"  border="0" align="left"/>

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2670957/January 21 2010 - Cropped_640.jpg" width="640" height="417" width_o="2048" height_o="1334" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2670957/January 21 2010 - Cropped_o.jpg" data-mid="13563993"  border="0" align="left"/>

THE SHADOW STRIPS Procedure above can be repeated, to determine the cumulative area that is necessary for shading the oculus for every day and time of the year. As one might have predicted, the shape of the shading device to protect the oculus from direct sunlight for an entire day is a curving strip. Instead of running the script for every minute and day of the year, samples of data can be taken every hour of the day, and the resulting ellipses can be geometrically interpolated using the lofting tool. Also, instead of running the script for every day of the month and year, the 21st of each month is used, as it was assumed to be the "median" day of each month. 21st is also when the worst extremes of a calendar year occurs, the equinoxes and solstices.

PROGRAM A two-week long abstract exercise, where the main objective was to dissect and map an unknown set of architectural elevations. The mapping then was used to derive rigorous and systematic strategies for developing a design of a paradigmatic house. While the method through which the mapping was conducted is subjective, the data gathered is objective, which is then utilized to establish a volumetric operation that results in the massing of the house.

<img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2555916/Strip-Diagonals-03_640.png" width="640" height="14" width_o="2048" height_o="44" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2555916/Strip-Diagonals-03_o.png" data-mid="13524498"  border="0" align="left"/>

PART 1 : TANK GEOMETRY

GEOMETRIC CONCEPT Thinc’s concept of the Gulf Stream tank originates from a martini glass, a centered, conical shape. Slicing off the stem and the upper part of the inclined conical shape creates a borderless, infinity view; representing the environment of the Gulf Stream in the open ocean. The tank’s geometrical set out is also largely dictated by the refractive index of water to air. The goal is simply to be able to look up to the window, through the ‘gulf stream’ and to the sky without seeing the walls that form the conical tank. The other parameters for the tank’s geometry are the oculus diameter, acrylic curvature, oculus tilt, and tank depth. With the term oculus we refer to the clear view dimension of the acrylic window. All the described parameters were established and their values set by Thinc.

GEOMETRIC PARAMETERS Concepts behind the Gulf Stream Tank can be summarized into 6, quantitative parameters.

<img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2555916/GS Tank Parameters - 01_640.jpg" width="640" height="396" width_o="1050" height_o="649" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2555916/GS Tank Parameters - 01_o.jpg" data-mid="13529638"  border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2555916/GS Tank Parameters - 02_640.jpg" width="640" height="396" width_o="1050" height_o="649" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2555916/GS Tank Parameters - 02_o.jpg" data-mid="13529639"  border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2555916/GS Tank Parameters - 03_640.jpg" width="640" height="396" width_o="1050" height_o="649" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2555916/GS Tank Parameters - 03_o.jpg" data-mid="13529645"  border="0" align="left"/>

GRASSHOPPER APPLICATION + MODELING Using Grasshopper, the 6 parameters can be used to quickly make 3D iterations of the tank. As the design develops, dimensions become more precise, and this tool can not only facilitate in confirming previous assumptions, but also quickly study various options.

<img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2555916/Gulf Stream Tank Definition Screenshot - Cropped_640.jpg" width="640" height="426" width_o="1804" height_o="1200" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2555916/Gulf Stream Tank Definition Screenshot - Cropped_o.jpg" data-mid="13530949"  border="0" align="left"/>

FORM STUDIES Different shape and form of the tank that results from different shapes of oculus and the lip of the tank can be quickly iterated and studied. Depending on the shape, the volume of water it contains changes drastically, which is very important for structural and life-support-system (LSS) calculations.

<img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2555916/Tank Geometry Options_640.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="2048" height_o="1536" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2555916/Tank Geometry Options_o.jpg" data-mid="13531018"  border="0" align="left"/>

VOLUMETRIC STUDIES More precise studies of the volumetric capacity of the tank is conducted to determine the optimal shape and volume of the tank. The volume of water the tank contains directly impact the shape, material and thickness of the tank itself. Also, the volume of water is also directly proportional to the approximate floor area of LSS equipment necessary to service the tank.

<img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2555916/GS Tank Iterations - Cropped_640.jpg" width="640" height="397" width_o="1600" height_o="992" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2555916/GS Tank Iterations - Cropped_o.jpg" data-mid="13574139"  border="0" align="left"/>

<img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2555916/Strip-Diagonals-03_640.png" width="640" height="14" width_o="2048" height_o="44" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2555916/Strip-Diagonals-03_o.png" data-mid="13524498"  border="0" align="left"/>

PART 2 : "INVISIBLE" TANK WALLS

EXPERIENTIAL CONCEPT In order to produce the effect of one being submerged in the "gulf stream," the tank must provide the viewer with widest viewing angle possible. In addition, the tank walls must be not be visible to the viewer, resulting in the illusion of an edge-less aquarium tank.

<img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2555916/Optical Parameters_640.jpg" width="640" height="590" width_o="2048" height_o="1889" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2555916/Optical Parameters_o.jpg" data-mid="13530658"  border="0" align="left"/>

PARAMETRS Using Snell’s Law (See Diagram Below), the refration angle of light traveling from one medium to another, can be determined. With the assumed Index of Refraction (I.O.R.) for the materials under study, we are able to observe the behavior of light as it travels through the oculus and the water.

<img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2555916/03 Angle Finding Formula_640.jpg" width="640" height="454" width_o="1919" height_o="1361" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2555916/03 Angle Finding Formula_o.jpg" data-mid="13531887"  border="0" align="left"/>

<img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2555916/Strip-Diagonals-03_640.png" width="640" height="14" width_o="2048" height_o="44" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/4/128955/2555916/Strip-Diagonals-03_o.png" data-mid="13524498"  border="0" align="left"/>

EXTENDED SIGHT LINES In addition to achieving the invisibility of the tank walls, another important parameter is the extension of the viewer's sigh line beyond the surface of the water. This is critical in achieving the full submerging experience, because depending on what the viewer sees through the refraction of the water in the tank, it could significantly make the tank appear shallow and fake. The sight line that is calculated and determined through the curvature of the oculus and the salinity of the water results in a zone above the water surface level that should be free of any objects, including the building itself.
